Women’s volleyball won the fifth and decisive set in the Northeast Conference tournament finals in Fairfield, Conn., Saturday against No. 1 seeded Sacred Heart.
The win gave FDU athletics a third team tournament championship, joining men’s and women’s soccer as fall champions, and earned the Knights their first NCAA tournament invite. The tournament will have first-round games on Dec. 1-16 at the top 16 seeds.
The No. 3-seeded Knights improved to 17-15 overall after going 9-5 in conference play.
“Another amazing performance for this team,” head coach David Gutenberg said. “We only know how to fight and that’s exactly what we did. I am so proud of our team and everything we stand for.”
Nguyen was voted Coach of the Year in the league.
FDU graduate Tatiana Fucka, a 6-3 middle blocker from Bologna, Italy, was named MVP of the tournament while Sofia Rampazzo and Allegra Rivas were voted NEC all-tournament.
The Knights will learn their first-round opponent when the NCAA announces its tournament field on Sunday, Nov. 27.
It was a tough match against SHU, with no clear indication of who would triumph till the last set.
This marked FDU’s first win over SHU since 2012.
