FDU will host the semifinal round of Northeast Conference men’s soccer championship tournament after clinching the No. 1 seed Sunday in a 0-0 draw at No. 3 St. Francis Brooklyn.
The Knights remained unbeaten in NEC play with a 5-0-2 worksheet and improved to 7-5-3, earning a bye to the semifinal round of the league tournament, played Thursday, Nov. 10, at University Stadium against the lowest remaining seed from the opening round on Sunday, Nov. 6.
The Knights close the regular season Sunday, Oct. 30, at NEC associate member Howard University.
Regardless of the outcome, FDU is the regular-season champ for the first time since 2004 and the seventh time overall.
The Knights can advance to the NCAA Div. 1 soccer championship tournament by winning the tournament with its automatic berth to the big dance. LIU is the defending champ.
“We would’ve preferred the win of course, but our goal was to get back on the bus after the game with the regular season trophy in hand and we achieved that,” Seth Roland, FDU’s head coach said in FDU’s game notes. “We competed with a focused and determined mentality and the guys have worked very hard to earn the honor of being the regular season champs.”
Roland is making his 24th career trip to the conference tournament in his 25 years leading FDU.
St. Francis Brooklyn is 2-1-3 NEC. The hosts outshot FDU 13-9.
