FDU shut out LIU, 3-0, Thursday at home in NEC women’s soccer.
FDU improved to 5-0-1 and stands second in the Northeast Conference with three matches remaining in the regular season.
The Knights (6-8-1 overall) travel to NEC unbeaten Central Connecticut (6-0-0) Sunday at 6 p.m. FDU is 5-3 at home but 1-5-1 in road play.
The Knights lost 3-0 to CCSU in last year’s conference tournament championship, the Devils’ fourth straight league crown and with it, earned the league’s ticket to the NCAA Division I tournament.
Against LIU, 2-3-2 NEC, scores by Lea Egner and freshman Andrea Ougaard powered the Knights to a 2-0 halftime lead.
Sophomore Aiyana Martinez-Montoya’s second-half score, her seventh goal in league play, kept her as the NEC scoring leader.
Sophomore keeper Malene Nielsen, NEC saves leader, averaging 5 a game, anchored FDU’s defense with six saves — all in the first half. This was the Knights’ second straight shutout and their third in their last four matches.
Four LIU players received yellow-card cautions as FDU took 26 shots.
Due to inclement weather, the game was played at 1 p.m., three hours earlier than originally scheduled. Attendance was listed at 37.
