The 1990s sitcom “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” which starred Will Smith, has announced a spinoff on the streaming service Peacock called “Bel-Air,” which will release the first three episodes on Sunday, Feb. 13.
Decades ago, “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” established a legacy of advocating for representation of black characters in television, striking down African American stereotypes. The comedy series addressed cultural prejudices impacting the black community including school life, the meaning of family, divorce, police brutality and racism.
“Bel-Air” will pose as a dramatic retelling of the original “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” It stars Jabari Banks, Olly Sholotan, Simone Joy Jones, Coco Jones, Cassandra Freeman and Adrian Holmes.
This new series is set in modern-day America, showcasing Will’s journey from West Philadelphia to a lavish lifestyle in Bel-Air. Jabari Banks (Will) will experience internal and external conflicts that come with his drastic shift from the streets of Philadelphia to a gated mansion in upscale California.
Moving away from the original series’ comedic stance, the new “Bel-Air” will take a dark turn on the events experienced by young Will Smith. However, a question remains: will this new series live up to the previous series’ work in effectively communicating the struggles of the African American community?
