LIVE BLOG: FDU Men’s Basketball Against Merrimack, Game 1

FDU drops their first game back in a month 62-51 as they fall to 2-7 with a 1-2 record in the NEC while Merrimack improves to 2-3 with a 2-3 record in the NEC.

FDU shot 19-59 (32.2%) from the field, 4-16 (25%) from three and 9-12 (75%) from the free-throw line. Merrimack shot 23-50 (46%) from the field, 7-27 (25.9%) from three, and 9-13 (69.2%) from the free throw line.

Powell led the Knights with 15 points with Square Jr. adding 11 points. Jenkins struggled as he had five points on 2-15 shooting from the field and 1-4 from three.

Derring led the Warriors with 19 points. Minor had 11 points and 10 rebounds with Watkins adding 10 points as well. 

FDU struggled mightily in the second half and did not shoot the ball well the whole game. The Knights will look to bounce back tomorrow for the second game at Merrimack at 4 p.m.

Derring makes both attempts at the free-throw line making the score 62-48.

8:34 p.m.

Jenkins hits the three to cut the lead to 60-48 with 1:56 remaining.

8:33 p.m.

Watkins heads back to the free-throw line making both attempts again and increasing the lead to 60-45.

8:32 p.m.

Watkins heads to the free-throw line and makes both attempts increasing the Warriors lead to 58-45.

8:29 p.m.

Rush runs the court and makes the layup to cut the lead to 56-45 with 2:57 remaining in the game.

8:28 p.m.

Derring makes the tough shot to extend the lead to 56-41, as Powell makes the shot to cut the lead back to 56-43 with 3:52 remaining.

8:26 p.m.

Derring makes a three as the Warriors now lead 54-41 with less than 6 minutes remaining in the game.

8:25 p.m.

Square Jr. lays it in to cut the lead to 51-41 with 6:30 remaining in the game.

8:23 p.m.

Jensen lays it up and in,  extending the lead to 51-39 with 7 minutes to go in the game.

8:21 p.m.

Derring makes a three, increasing Merrimack’s lead to 49-39.

8:20 p.m.

Powell heads back to the free-throw line and makes both attempts making the score 46-39.

8:19 p.m.

Reid goes in for a layup making the score 46-37.

8:17 p.m.

Powell heads to the free-throw line and makes both attempts making the score 37-44 with 9:47 remaining.

8:16 p.m.

Minor drives in for a layup increasing Merrimack’s lead to 44-35.

8:12 p.m.

The Warriors lead is 42-35 with 12 minutes remaining.

8:11 p.m.

Edmead makes the second free throw, increasing Merrimack’s lead with a score of 40-35 and 12:45 remaining.

8:08 p.m.

Powell makes one out of two free-throws shortening Merrimack’s lead with a score 33-36.

8:05 p.m.

The Warriors go up by six 36-30 with 15:24 remaining in the game as Jenkins nails the jumper to cut the lead to 36-32.

8:04 p.m.

Minor drives in for a layup tying the game 30-30.

8:03 p.m.

Jensen makes a three for Merrimack but Fairleigh Dickinson still leads 30-28.

7:46 p.m.

At halftime, FDU leads 28-25 as Baker and Square Jr. lead the Knights’ with 7 points each. Minor leads the Warriors with 7 points as well. 

FDU shot 11-32 (34.4%) from the field, 2-10 (20%) from three and 4-6 (66.7%) from the free-throw line, while Merrimack shot 11-26 (42.3%) from the field, 2-14 (14.3%) from three and 1-2 from the free-throw line.

Both teams struggled to shoot the ball in the first half, but FDU looks much more comfortable playing and improved from their last game they played. 

The one-month break they had gave them plenty of time to practice and play better. So far FDU is playing much better on the ball than previous games.

7:42 p.m.

Merrimack calls for a time out with 8.1 seconds left in the first half and the score 28-25 for th Knights.

7:40 p.m.

Square Jr. heads back to the free-throw line making both shots making the score 28-23 with 1:43 remaining in the first half. 

7:38 p.m.

Square Jr. heads to the free-throw line and makes one out of the two shots making the score 29-23 with 2:12 remaining in the first half.

7:36 p.m.

Baker drives to the hoop and makes the tough shot to extend the FDU lead to 25-20. Jensen makes a three on the other end to cut the lead back to 25-23 with 2:43 remaining in the half.

7:35 p.m.

Square Jr. drives to the hoop and lays it up and in to extend the FDU lead to 23-20 with 3:32 remaining in the half.

7:33 p.m.

McCoy hits the jumper to cut the FDU lead to 21-20 with 4:37 remaining in the half.

7:32 p.m.

Fairleigh Dickinson gets called for goaltending making the score 21-18.

7:30 p.m.

Both teams go for three attempts but fail to make it on either side.

7:25 p.m.

Munden Jr. lays it in and draws the foul to go to the free throw-line for one. Munden Jr. misses the free throw, but FDU has the lead 21-16 with 8:09 remaining in the half.

7:23 p.m.

Powell lays it in as the lead is now 19-15 for FDU with 9:13 remaining in the half.

7:22 p.m.

Joe Munden Jr. checks in to the game and lays it in to extend the FDU lead to 17-13 with 9:52 remaining in the half

7:21 p.m.

Powell makes the free throw as FDU’s lead is now 15-13 with 10 minutes to go in the half.

7:20 p.m.

Brandon Powell lays it in and draws the foul and will head to the line for a free throw as FDU is down 13-12 with 10 minutes to go in the half.

7:17 p.m.

Rush banks in the three to cut the lead to 11-10 with 12:57 remaining in the half.

7:15 p.m.

Baker ends the run with a three to cut the lead to 11-7 with 14:44 remaining in the half.

7:13 p.m.

McCoy extends the run to 9-0 now with a jumper as the lead is now 11-4 for the Warriors with 15:02 remaining in the half.

7:12 p.m.

Reid extends the run to 7-0 with a lay up as the Warriors are up 9-4 with 15:42 remaining in the half.

7:11 p.m.

Derring drills the corner three to give Merrimack the lead, 7-4 with 16:18 remaining in the first half.

7:10 p.m.

Baker steals the ball and lays it up and in to give FDU the lead, 4-2 with 17:21 remaining in the first half.

7:08 p.m.

Minor scores the first basket for Merrimack off of a missed three. Warriors up 2-0 as Square Jr. lays it in on the other end to tie the game at 2.

7:05 p.m.

FDU’s starting lineup for tonight is Jahlil Jenkins, Callum Baker, Brandon Rush, Daniel Rodrigeuz and John Square Jr.

Merrimack’s lineup for tonight is Mykel Derring, Mikey Watkins, Devin Jensen, Jordan Minor and Ziggy Reid.

Hi everyone and welcome back to another men’s basketball live blog. This is Anthony Covino, the sports editor of The Equinox finally back after almost a month since the last game.

 The COVID-19 pause is now over for both men’s and women’s basketball as the men’s are set to open up a two game slate against Merrimack for the first time this season.

Tonight I am joined by assistant sports editor Jen Malti.

FDU is currently 2-6 with a 1-1 record in the NEC while Merrimack is 1-3 with a 1-3 record in the NEC.

FDU’s leading scorers for the season are sophomore guard Brandon Rush with 15.9 PPG, senior guard Jahlil Jenkins with 14.8 PPG and senior guard Elyjah Williams with 14.3 PPG, 

Merrimack’s leading scorers are junior guard Mikey Watkins with 13.5 PPG, sophomore forward Jordan Minor with 12.5 PPG and freshman guard Malik Edmead with 10.5 PPG.
