Many of this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations at Fairleigh Dickinson University are getting a virtual makeover.

Rashard Mills, assistant director of student union building operations, said Student Life will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15) despite the challenges of the pandemic.

“This year, the Office of Student Life has several events planned to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month by providing informative programs in Hispanic culture, history, and traditions, while also supplying our Hispanic students with a space to share their voices with the FDU community,” Mills said via email.

The Office of Student Life will host the Virtual Hispanic Excellence Program, where a presentation about famous Hispanic historical figures will follow guest speaker Enrique Noguera, Passaic County Community College Equal Opportunity Fund (EOF) Director.

Student Life’s “Explore” series will also be getting a virtual makeover. Digital tours of cultural exhibits at museums will be offered in the near future and will even host a group discussion after.

In a partnership with Gourmet Dining, an online cooking demonstration is in the works so that anyone can make traditional savory Hispanic dishes in quarantine.

Open-Mic Knight is another event going online, and the one in the near future will encourage Hispanic students to share stories, poems and songs.

The Student Union Building will showcase Hispanic cultures and traditions, each room dedicated to a different Hispanic country, co-sponsored by multiple student organizations at the Metropolitan campus.

“Here, students will be able to learn about the different traditions of Hispanic cultures, through fun games, activities, and crafts,” Mills said.

“And all of this is just the start. The Office of Student Life remains committed to providing students with safe and inclusive events for the entirety of Hispanic Heritage month and beyond.”
