If you would’ve told me at the beginning of 2020 that I would lead The Equinox team through a summer internship and help pave the way for high expectations from our summer of reporting, I probably would’ve looked at you like a deer in headlights.
Coming to the end of this internship experience, I have learned a lot about myself and the wonderful Equinox staff. Leading people through this summer of “the year like no other” helped me realize how powerful journalism is and how important The Equinox is to the FDU community.
Everyone who participated in our summer internship chose to show up and put in the work because they too realized the need for journalism, especially now.
When I became editor in chief, I saw big things for The Equinox over the next two years of my FDU career, but I never would’ve expected to accomplish so much in three short months. We reached higher-than-ever view counts on our website and started a video “Roundtable” series that will hopefully live on into the school year. I am ecstatic to lead this great team.
As the fall approaches, I keep thinking about what is next and how we keep getting better. Everyone will have much more to do after classes start, but then I remember that even though members of our internship had other things to do, they still put in the work to virtually meet and report and write stories.
Professor Krochmal, Managing Editor Amaya Morales and I asked our internship staff to each write a reflection regarding the summer experience. As I spoke to many of our members, I realized what made this internship so special is that it was run by students for students. All of our workshops were taught by peers, creating a new respect for one another.
I could not be more proud of what we accomplished this summer.

This summer was not at all what I expected. It did, however, end up being one I will never forget.
Are you interested in joining The Equinox team? On Tuesday, Aug. 11, the student-run newspaper will host a general-interest meeting via Zoom at 8 p.m. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
