The Northeast Conference today canceled the women’s basketball tournament, which had reached the semifinals stage. FDU, seeded No. 3, was slated to travel to Maryland to play No. 2 Mount St. Mary’s tonight at 7.

The conference also canceled  the women’s bowling tournament and suspended all spring sports conference play through March 29, according to the NEC website.

“I’m disappointed that our women’s basketball student-athletes were not able to compete today for a chance to play for an NEC Championship title,” Brad Hurlbut, FDU athletic director said in an email to The Equinox. “However, I agree with the NEC and its decision to cancel the women’s basketball tournament and suspend all spring sports. It is the right thing to do in these uncertain times. The health and well being of our student-athletes have to be the top priority and put ahead of competition.”

FDU finishes the season 13-17 after defeating Bryant in the quarterfinals.
