Today, due to the coronavirus threat, the Northeast Conference decided to cancel the rest of the 2020 Women’s Basketball Tournament, the women’s bowling tournament and suspended all spring sports indefinitely.
College sports has followed the NBA by suspending the season for the foreseeable future. Just today, MLB, NHL, MLS and the NCAA suspended competition operations. Every major sport is now on hiatus until they can all decide when to resume playing games with fans — or maybe even without fans.
This is the first time that sports have suspended games since 9/11 and the labor lockouts. The world is in a state of chaos at the moment and every commissioner of every league wants to protect players, coaches, staff, and the fans from the spread of coronavirus.
Most of the professional sports seem to hope to resume within two to three weeks at the earliest, but do not be surprised if they do not resume for months. This disease is at the start in the U.S., and there will be no sports for now.
At the moment, two NBA players have contracted coronavirus, the Utah Jazz’s Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell. This has prompted the NBA to suspend the season, and all the rest of the sports leagues followed.
There is no timetable for each league to return to play, but when it does happen, players and fans will feel much more confident about coronavirus being contained and can finally watch their favorite teams and players again. Only time will tell for when all sports operations can return to normal and begin or finish their seasons.
