The FDU men’s soccer team defeated NJIT 2-1 at home on Tuesday night to improve to 4-2 on the season.

NJIT falls to 2-1-3 on the season.

The first half saw both teams taking shots on goal, but both sides were unable to convert any opportunities. The score at halftime was 0-0.

Going into the second half, FDU scored the first goal when junior defender Rocky Garretson slotted home an easy goal in the 54th minute. Sophomore midfielder Ideal Shefqeti had the assist. Sophomore forward Joshua Ferreira then extended the lead by scoring the Knights’ second goal of the game in the 73rd minute. Junior forward Diego Arribas had the assist.

NJIT scored a consolation goal in the 81st minute when freshman forward Alejandro Rabell put away a shot in front of the net, but by that time the game was firmly in the grasp of the Knights. Junior forward Regsan Watkins had the assist.

“I thought it was a very very committed, disciplined, focused, determined performance by our guys,” FDU head coach Seth Roland said. “I’m really pleased with how we competed tonight, and I thought we created a number of really good opportunities and got two really good goals. We were defending really well, and then they got one and it got a little hectic, but we kept our discipline and prevented them from tieing us.”

FDU junior goalkeeper Jahmali Waite had two saves, while NJIT freshman goalkeeper Samuel Resigys also had two saves.

FDU will look to extend their winning streak to two games when they take on Princeton on Saturday, Sept. 21, at 7:00 PM at University Stadium.
