The Men’s golf team finished no higher than fifth at any time during the 2018-2019 season.
Andrew Morris led the team with a 75.1 scoring average through 17 rounds this season. Morris, a junior, was named NEC (North East Conference) men’s Golfer of the month for March with a strong performance as the season came to a close.
He shot a pair of 74’s at the Lonnie Barton Invitational tying for fifth with a field of 129 golfers. The following week he shot a pair of 73’s (+2 overall) at the Pizza Hut-Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational.
He finished tied for 18th in a field of 78 players. To finish the season the team has the Navy Invitational starting on April 19th in Maryland and The Northeast Conference Championships from April 26-28.
The women’s golf team captured the NEC Championship for the fourth time in five years and play in the NCAA Regionals on May 6-8.
Freshman Tomita Arejola finished in first place with a +3 score at this year’s NEC Championship.
Sophomore Nicola Smith had a scoring average of 77.4 through 17 rounds. Smith, was named the NEC Women’s Golfer of the month for March. When asked how the team performed for the season she has stated, “I think that we have all had our individual struggles and successes, but I think everyone put in a great amount of effort to do their part for the team. We all would have liked a couple more wins. during the regular season, especially considering the amount of success the team managed to achieve last year, however we still achieved our main goal of the year which was to win the conference again.”
The team was NEC champions last season and qualified for the NCAA Regionals.
“I am looking forward to showing what the team is really capable of. Although every player has demonstrated what they are capable of this semester, I would love for us all to bring our strengths together on the same day. For the seasons to come I look forward to continued success for the team. I think it has been very difficult, especially this semester, only having 5 players because it puts a lot of pressure on everyone to stay fit and healthy. But we have a new player joining the team in the fall and I think this will only help to strengthen our team further.”
To conclude the season, the Women’s golf team will play at the Regionals starting on May 6th. Congrats to both the Men’s and Women’s golf team.
“I’m very proud of the amount of hard work every member of the team put in this year,” said Smith.
