Seniors Darnell Edge and Mike Holloway Jr. represented the Northeast Conference in this years Dos Equis 3×3 National Championship from April 5th to April 7th in at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota. The Dos Equis 3×3 National Championship is a tournament consisting of all 32 college basketball conferences made up of 4 seniors from schools in each Division I conference.
Sacred Heart senior guard Sean Hoehn and Wagner senior guard Romone Saunders completed the NEC team along with Edge and Holloway.
“It was a real good time being able to compete with guys who we’ve played against for years,” Edge said. “Being able to bond with them and come together to represent the conference was a refreshing experience. Taking down some big name conferences in the process was something I really enjoyed. I feel that we represented the NEC very well making it to the Final Four and walking away with some money as well,” Edge said.
“I enjoyed the opportunity to represent the Northeast Conference and Fairleigh Dickinson University, and honored to be offered to play in this great event,” Holloway said.
On the first day of the tournament, the NEC defeated the Big West, 22-11. Edge had 3 points, Mike Holloway did not score in this game The NEC then defeated the Atlantic-10, 21-17. Darnell Edge had 5 points while Mike Holloway Jr. added 1 point.
On the second day of the tournament, the NEC suffered their first loss to the American Conference, 21-19. Edge had 4 points, while Holloway Jr. had 2 points. The NEC advanced to the Round of 16 and defeated the SEC 22-20. Darnell Edge had 6 points, while Mike Holloway Jr. had 1 point.
The NEC then defeated the American Conference 21-20 in the quarterfinals. Darnell Edge was the leading scorer with 9 points while Mike Holloway Jr. added 1 point
The NEC then lost to the WCC 21-15 in the semifinals. Darnell Edge was the leading scorer with 7 points, while Mike Holloway Jr. added 1 point. The NEC the lost to the MAC 21-14 in the third place game. Darnell Edge was the leading scorer with 7 points, while Holloway added 1 point.
Colonial defeated the WCC, 21-13 to take home the Dos Equis 3×3 National Championship and won a total of $103,000.
Holloway had the fifth most total rebounds with 28 and had the most assists with 14. Edge finished third in field goals with 28 and finished third with minutes played with 46.
The NEC took home a total of $2,000 after making it to the semifinals of the tournament. Edge, Holloway, Saunders, and Hoehn all split the money, each receiving $500 each.
This is the first professional pay day for the participants.
