The FDU Women’s Basketball team’s struggles continued in their 60-44 home loss to Wagner on Saturday.
This is the Knights sixth consecutive loss as they fall to 6-19 with a 3-11 record in the NEC. Wagner improves to 10-15 with a 8-6 record in the NEC.
The Knights shot 18-55 (32.7 percent) from the field, 5-18 (27.8 percent) from the three-point line and only converted 3-5 free throws (60 percent). Wagner shot 21-59 (35.6 percent) from the field, 9-29 (31.0 percent) from the three point line, and converted 9-13 free throws (69.2 percent).
“Defensively I thought we did a good job today, they are a high scoring team, they’ve won six out of seven. We were able to hold them to sixty. But offensively we didn’t have a sharp day,” said FDU head coach Peter Cinella. “We cut the lead to three midway through the third quarter, but we weren’t having our shots fall, we missed easy layups, and struggled getting the ball into our offense quickly against the press,” said Cinella.
Senior guard Natalie Zamora from Albuquerque, New Mexico led the Knights with 14 points. Senior guard Madelynn Comly from Littlestown, Pennsylvania added 11 points. Sophomore forward Madison Stanley from Woodbridge, New Jersey added 10 points and 12 rebounds of her own.
Wagner sophomore guard/forward Khaleah Edwards from London, England and redshirt junior Janelle Mullen from Ozone Park, New York both had 15 points. Redshirt Sophomore Taylah Simmons from Melbourne,Victoria, Australia had 11 points.
The Knights were only down 29-22 at halftime, and were able to hold Wagner’s offense in check. The Knights cut the lead to 36-33 with 4:13 remaining in the third quarter. Wagner then went on a 7-0 run and led 43-33 with 1:57 remaining in the third quarter. The Knights could not come back and fell to Wagner 60-44.
The Knights will look to snap their six game losing streak as they host Sacred Heart on Monday, Feb. 25 on ESPN+ in the Rothman Center.
