Valentine’s Day Ideas for You and Your Sweetheart

Valentine’s Day is coming up, and with it the onslaught of mushy couples parading around in public to their various typical Valentine’s Day date ideas. Dinner and a movie? Too easy. Walk in the park? Boring. What can you and your special someone do that hasn’t been done before? That’s just as unique as you two special little snowflakes? Well have no fear, because there are some ways you can celebrate the holiday of romance without worrying you’ll meet your ex taking their new fling to the same place you two went to last year.

If your girl is your princess, why not take her to a castle? That’s right gents, it’s really possible to take your girl to a castle, buy her a nice dinner, and still get an eye roll at the end of the night. Because that castle is White Castle. Yes, it’s true, your local White Castle is currently taking reservations for their Valentine’s Day dinner, during which the fast food chain says “tables will be served, cravers will be treated like royalty, memories will be cherished forever (so don’t forget your camera).” The number for reservations in the New York/New Jersey area is (908) 753-0822 Ext. 101. Seating is limited and reservations are required, so call fast, because for Pete’s sake these seats must be going quickly.

But what if you are of the vegetarian variety? Or what if you actually want a second date?  Perhaps you’re still desperately clinging to that “get healthy” New Year’s Resolution? It’s

February dude, you don’t have to stick to that. But if you really want to, why don’t you let your girl show you how she’s better than you at yet another thing and take her on a 5k? Yep, this is also a real thing that really happens, it’s called the Cupid’s Chase 5k in New York City. This actually takes places the Saturday before V-Day on Feb. 11 at 10 a.m. in Riverside Park. While you might feel bad about your physique, at least you’ll feel better about your spending habits, as the $30 it takes to register (as long as you do it before race day) will go towards charities helping people with disabilities.

Now what if you’re somewhere in between these two suggestions? Perhaps you’re saying “I’m definitely too good to go to White Castle on Valentine’s Day” but also “I go to White Castle too much on the other days of the year to do the second option.” Well, quiet your eager heart, because there is still hope for you and your lovebird yet. If you don’t like exercise, then hopefully you like art. Because just across the George Washington Bridge on 96th Street is Art Studio NY, which is hosting a Valentine’s Day Couples Painting Class. For just $48 each, you and that girl with the weird haircut you met while waiting in line at Starbucks can sip wine, relax, and create a painting that you can both try to push on the other person after the class is over. Because no one has room in their dorm for a 16” x 20” canvas. The class is over 21, BYOB, and you either have to bring your own canvas or pay for one. But everything else is included!

Perhaps you just want to listen to some tunes this Valentine’s Day? But you also don’t want to seem uncultured to that weird-haircut Starbucks girl, so maybe the Death Grips cover band concert is out of the question. Well, maybe try the “Love in the Parlours: A Valentine in Concert” event put on by the NYC Parks Division at the Merchant House Museum on Feb. 14 at 7 p.m.

This concert is performed by The Bond Street Euterpean Singing Society, and features pieces by all the famous dead guys: Beethoven, Schubert and many others. Admission is $40, but what else are you going to do with the rest of your Christmas money? Take your girl on a nice date. Your mother is calling and she still wants to know why you’re not married yet.
